Counting words and characters

A word counter tallies the words, characters, sentences, and paragraphs in your text, plus an estimate of how long it takes to read. It's handy for essays with a word limit, social posts with a character cap, meta descriptions, and articles where reading time matters. Everything runs in your browser, so your text is never uploaded.

How the counts work

Words are counted by splitting on spaces and line breaks. Characters are counted both with and without spaces, since some limits (like tweets) count every character while others don't. Reading time assumes an average pace of about 200 words per minute.

Common limits

SEO meta description ≈ 150–160 characters
SEO title tag ≈ 50–60 characters
Reading speed ≈ 200 words per minute

Frequently asked questions

How are words counted?

Words are counted by splitting your text on spaces and line breaks, then counting the non-empty pieces. Numbers and hyphenated words each count as one word.

Do characters include spaces?

We show both. \"Characters\" includes spaces and punctuation; \"characters without spaces\" excludes them, which matches how some platforms count.

How is reading time estimated?

Reading time divides the word count by an average reading speed of about 200 words per minute, then rounds up to the nearest minute.

Is my text private?

Yes. All counting happens in your browser and nothing you paste is sent to a server or stored.
